Promising 5S Lean Management

Lean thinking is the embodiment of lean management that connotes tidy, clear and focused views that can also be visual. It is at this point when 5S lean management become valuable.

The 5S lean management uses a tool called 5S system of organization that can make a place of work uncluttered to maximize benefits while minimizing waste. This was pioneered in Toyota. Thus, this JIT (Just in Time) is Japanese. Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain are the five elements of JIT.

“Sort or Seiri”
Seiri connotes Systematization, Simplification or Sort. It stresses the order that may give system to place of work. The order and an uncluttered appearance increase productivity and promote efficiency in filing, stocking, organizing, etc.

“Set or Seiton”
Seiton means Set in Order or Straighten. Orderliness is the literal translation of Seiton. This entails the creation of a series of steps to infuse order and system to put things in their right places. This is an extension of Seiri. By putting things that are related by function or process, the space in the area of work is maximized.

“Shine or Seiso”
Seiso refers to Shine or Sweeping that indicates Cleanliness the literal meaning of Seiso. The literal meaning is enough to suggest the uplifting of one’s feelings that improves human productivity. It can also signify clean assignments and schedules as to who is responsible for what, and works where, until what time. This is also related to responsibility.

“Seiketsu or Standardization”
Seiketsu translates into Standardized Clean-up and Systematization and Sanitation. It may well be thought too as the ways by which the first three pillars are maintained. It is so common to forget or unintentionally ignore certain practices when those have not yet been imbibed. So, to foster consistency conducting regular revisits of the first 3 S’s referred to as “5S Job Cycle” is done.

“Sustain or Shitsuke”
The last S signifies Shitsuke or Sustain or Self-discipline. It is not a rigorous routine reviews like Seiketsu but rather a set of approaches that transforms people to appreciate all the 5S. Willingness to imbibe 5S is the expected outcome if the appreciation can be developed among employees.

This 5S lean management systematically approaches the problem with practical and sensible solution that is hard to ignore and easy to do.
